One key and no spare means one lost key away from a locked door.
A new roommate, a family member, a sitter or a new hire.
It catches, or you have to jiggle it before it turns.
A copy is cut by tracing the key in front of it. Copy a copy of a copy, and tiny errors add up until the key sticks or won't turn at all. When you can, copy the original key, not a spare.
One at home in a safe spot, and one with someone you trust nearby, is a good start.
If you know where every key is, copies are fine. If you don't, a rekey resets things and you start fresh.
A plain metal car key is like any other key. Most newer car keys have a chip that has to be programmed to the car. See car keys.
